A master’s degree is among requirements to obtain the Licensed Professional Counselor credential.

“I am extremely excited about the launch of our fully online Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling program, which trains counselors to work with individuals with physical, mental, sensory, emotional and cognitive disabilities to overcome barriers to access and inclusion in integrated-competitive employment and community participation,” Ahonle said.

The new option will allow working professionals and students from outside the state and even beyond the U.S. to fulfill their career goal of obtaining a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling, he added.

“I wish to express my gratitude to CEPF’s department head, Dr. Daniel Gadke, and the dean of the College of Education, Dr. Teresa Jayroe, for their unalloyed support and commitment, without which this would not have been possible,” Ahonle said.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for rehabilitation counselors are expected to increase by a factor of 11% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations, mainly because of increased need for rehabilitation services among growing elderly populations; wounded military veterans; people with emerging disabilities such as neurodevelopmental disorders, diabetes, and primary pain disorders; and people with certain autoimmune diseases.

Graduates obtain employment in a wide variety of settings including state and federal vocational rehabilitation agencies, mental health and substance abuse treatment programs, public school districts, hospitals, the Veterans Administration and in community-based rehabilitation programs.

For more information, visit https://www.online.msstate.edu/msrc or email Ahonle at zja34@msstate.edu. We appreciate their support, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work with them to help move our state forward.”

Final approval for the development project was granted by the Mississippi Board of Trustees of Institutions of Higher Learning today [Oct. 20]. With construction slated to begin in 2023, the center will be located at the campus core near the MSU Drill Field. Its footprint and adjacent quadrangle will replace McCarthy Gymnasium, current home of the Department of Kinesiology.

Known for their entrepreneurial and philanthropic spirits, Jim and Thomas Duff are the owners of Duff Capital Investors (DCI), a privately owned company headquartered in Columbia. Comprised of over 20 businesses from trucking, tires and automotive to construction, energy and insurance, it is the largest collective enterprise in the state. DCI provides more than 13,000 employment opportunities across the nation and generates just under $4 billion in total revenues.

Many of the DCI companies have distinguished themselves as leaders in their respective industries, including Southern Tire Mart, the largest commercial tire dealer and retread manufacturer in North America, and KLLM Transport Services, the second largest temperature-controlled carrier in the U.S.

The brothers give to a wide variety of organizations and charities and are especially committed supporters of communities in which their Southern Tire Mart stores operate and the higher education system across Mississippi.

“Mississippi State is really doing good things for the state, and we want to be a part of that. It’s important to us to give back because it makes a difference for a lot of people,” said Jim Duff.

As someone who experiences dyslexia, Jim Duff understands first-hand the difficulties of a learning disability and hopes this new center will be an essential source of support for students in need of assistance.

“I didn’t do well in school, and I’ve competed my whole adult life with people who are very educated. So, to me, education is very important,” said Jim Duff. “It brings me great satisfaction to be able to help this program and to invest in our state’s wonderful universities that are changing people’s lives every day.”

Tommy Duff saw the negative effect his brother’s experience had on his time as a student. As a result, he wants their investments to help others see and experience education as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

“Education should bring out the best in everyone,” said Tommy Duff. “We hope this gift will enable a center where students can grow their skills and self-confidence. There are a lot of bright kids in our state and at MSU, and we want them to have the ability to realize their potential to compete and succeed regardless of their means.”

MSU’s Department of Kinesiology, housed in the College of Education, has the largest enrollment of any university department. Offering five distinctive concentration programs for undergraduate kinesiology majors, as well as specialized master’s and doctoral-level graduate training, the department supports the activities of a wide range of academic and research studies.

Also housed within MSU’s College of Education is the ADDC, an outreach service, training and research clinic under the direction of the college’s Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Foundations. Acting as the flagship clinic of the School Psychology Services Center, ADDC officially opened its doors in 2014 with a mission to provide high quality clinical services to the community, train future professionals, and engage in research to enhance understanding of autism spectrum and developmental disorders.

When the clinic first started, it was serving five children. Now, clinic personnel meet with approximately 100 children every week, helping to fill the growing need for clinical services in North Mississippi. Additionally, the clinic runs the Autism Liaison program that provides services to degree-seeking MSU students with Autism, a service that is unique to the university.

“With the establishment of The Jim and Thomas Duff Center, Jim and Tommy have forever changed the landscape of support for individuals with disabilities in the state of Mississippi,” said Dan Gadke, associate dean for research in the College of Education and ADDC director. “Not only will this center serve to support direct interventions and long-term life outcomes for individuals with a wide variety of needs, but it will also offer a lifeline for families, professionals, educators and trainees throughout our state.”

Gadke continued, “Most notably, this generous gift grants the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic the opportunity to train future professionals who will continue to advance psychological, behavioral and educational needs in Mississippi. By having a state-of-the-art center, we become even more competitive for research grants benefiting disability work and recruiting high quality students to advance our state. Jim and Thomas’s impact will resonate throughout Mississippi far past our lifetime and we are so very thankful for their generosity.”

For more information on The Jim and Thomas Duff Center development contact Les Potts, MSU’s associate vice president for administration at (662) 325-5864.

MSU is Mississippi’s leading university, available online at www.msstate.edu.

Link:

https://www.msstate.edu/newsroom/article/2022/10/msu-announces-plans-construct-jim-and-thomas-duff-center

Fri, 28 Oct 2022 15:48:36 +0000 lp1163 3544 at /news/msu-announces-plans-construct-jim-and-thomas-duff-center/#comments 2024欧洲杯投注官网_买球app /news/missy-hopper-honored-phi-kappa-phi/

Contact: Lydia Palmer

STARKVILLE, Miss.—The College of Education at Mississippi State University congratulates Professor Missy Hopper for her outstanding work with the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi as national president-elect, president and past president.

Phi Kappa Phi is a multidisciplinary collegiate honor society that initiates approximately 25,000 new members each year with chapters on over 325 college and university campuses. It is the oldest and most selective of its kind in the nation.

Before her terms in presidential roles from 2018-2022, Hopper was named a Distinguished Member in 2014 for her work with MSU’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter and service on the national board. She said her work with the MSU chapter prepared her for the subsequent leadership roles.

“I would not have been active at the national level if it were not for my work with the MSU chapter,” Hopper said. “I came from a campus without a Phi Kappa Phi chapter, and when I moved here in 2005, I was happy to get involved.”

She served in various PKP offices including president of the MSU chapter from 2006-2011. The university has a prestigious chapter that often is designated as a “Chapter of Excellence” by the national headquarters.

Hopper began working at MSU in 2005, her first time as part of the MSU community since earning her bachelor’s degree at the university. She is a professor of English education in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education, and she serves as the program area graduate coordinator.

This summer’s issue of PKP’s publication Forum profiles Hopper as a “great leader” during her time as president and past-president, helping the society weather COVID-19’s impact.

Her relationship with and service to the organization has not gone unnoticed. Hopper played a key role in establishing and setting the criteria for a $10,000 dissertation fellowship. During PKP’s recent biennial convention in Orlando, Florida, the society unveiled the new name for the fellowship—the Dr. Missy Hopper Dissertation Fellowship Award.

This award is one of 15 that PKP gives annually to assist doctoral candidates. Hopper said she is very appreciative the fellowship she helped design was named in her honor.

“My hope is that this fellowship will help students complete their graduate degrees with less financial burden,” she said. “I believe in the society motto, ‘Let the love of learning rule humanity.’”

Established in 1903, MSU’s College of Education is home to six academic departments, one research unit and numerous service units. Prescott met Quinn at Fan Day along with other members of his family who faithfully attend MSU games each year.

Prescott made a strong connection with the Gregory family. He described how the simple act of wearing an armband printed with the message "Pray 4 Quinn," which was given to him by the family to raise awareness about Sanfilippo syndrome, is actually a blessing to him.

"It is a blessing from God that I'm making them happy just by wearing the bracelet and showing it during the season," Prescott said.

As fans like the Gregorys root for Prescott and the Bulldogs, he emphasizes that he is fortunate to have the opportunity to learn stories about the lives of MSU fans.
